Where Things Stand
Russia-Ukraine: President Trump was expected to speak with President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia on Monday morning in talks aimed at a cease-fire in Ukraine, a day after Russian forces launched one of their biggest drone bombardments of the war. Mr. Trump was also expected to speak later with President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine. The White House press secretary, Karoline Leavitt, said before the calls that Mr. Trump has “grown weary and frustrated, with both sides.”
Vance at the Vatican: Vice President JD Vance delivered Pope Leo XIV an invitation to the White House from Mr. Trump in the first private conversation between America’s highest-profile Catholics since the new pontiff was elected. There has been tension between the papacy and the Trump administration, particularly over issues of immigration and theology.

Trump policy agenda: The House Budget Committee late Sunday night revived Mr. Trump’s stalled bill to cut taxes and spending after a handful of fiscally conservative Republicans allowed it to advance. But they continued to press for deeper reductions to health and environmental programs.
